  • Are there cold spots throughout the house?
  • Do you have to wait for hot water?
  • Does your home get too hot?
  • Are you hearing unusual noises coming from your radiator?

If you answered “yes” to any of the questions above, you are very likely facing an issue with your home’s heating system. While we understand that this can be a daunting task, ARTC Heating & Cooling is here to make choosing your new heating system easy. There are several options for your new heating system. We’ll help you understand the benefits and differences between your options and stay by your side at every step of the installation process so that you know what’s going on.

Heat Efficiency Ratings

An important part of choosing a new heating system is looking at its efficiency rating.

What is AFUE?

AFUE, or Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency, is an important measure of how well a furnace can convert energy from the fuel it uses into heat for warming your home. It is required by the Department of Energy that all furnace manufacturers display each unit’s AFUE on the familiar yellow Energy Guide label, so consumers can compare efficiencies between one furnace and another. The minimum standard for new furnaces and boilers currently set by the DOE is 80% AFUE. Depending on the type of fuel used to power a furnace, such as natural gas or heating oil, actual operating costs may vary; however, the AFUE rating provides a good starting point when comparing different models of furnaces. Higher AFUE ratings suggest greater efficiency and thus lower fuel bills over time.

What is HSPF?

HSPF, or Heating Seasonal Performance Factor, is a metric used to measure the efficiency of heat pumps when it comes to heating a home during colder months. It is calculated by taking into account the energy output of a heat pump over an entire season and comparing it to the energy input. This helps homeowners determine how much money they can save on their heating bills by choosing a more efficient heat pump.

HSPF2 is a recently refined version of this metric created by the Department of Energy (DOE). This new testing procedure results in more accurate measurements and higher standards for heating systems, with split system heat pumps needing to have an HSPF2 of 7.5 or higher and single-packaged heat pumps needing an HSPF2 of 6.7 or higher as of Jan 1st 2023. An HSPF2 rating above 7.5 indicates that the system is operating at peak efficiency and will be able to keep your home comfortable all winter long while costing you less on utilities each month.

Stay Cozy with a New Heating System

Heating boilers work by boiling water and then distributing it through your home either in water or steam form. It warms the air either through radiators or radiant floor systems. These units can be a very efficient choice for you and your home and are simple systems to install. Radiant floor systems are an even more efficient heating tool than traditional radiators. Because they require a lower temperature than traditional radiators, they consume less energy and can save you money on your energy bills. Plus, getting out of bed and stepping on a warm floor in the wintertime can feel like a real luxury!
